Fire Prevention Week 2024: “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!”

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2024: “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” This important event will take place from October 6–12, 2024. The focus on functional smoke alarms is vital, as NFPA data reveals that a significant number of fire-related deaths occur in homes lacking smoke alarms or having non-functional alarms.

“Working smoke alarms are crucial for saving lives during a home fire,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy. “This year’s campaign emphasizes the essential role of smoke alarms and provides guidance on how to install, test, and maintain them effectively.”

Key Messages for Fire Prevention Week 2024:

  1. Install Smoke Alarms: Place smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
  2. Meet Diverse Needs: Ensure smoke alarms accommodate all family members, particularly those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  3. Monthly Testing: Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button.
  4. Replacement Guidelines: Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years or if they do not respond when tested.
