The Euclid Shade Tree Commission, in collaboration with the Davey Resource Group, hosted the much-anticipated Arbor Day event, "Let's Plant a Tree," at Euclid City Hall. The event, held on Saturday, October 19th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., taught the intricacies of tree planting and the importance of urban forestry.

Arbor Day, traditionally a day meant to encourage tree planting and care, was celebrated late in Euclid with a focus on education. Attendees were treated to a comprehensive program that went beyond the basics of tree planting. The Euclid Shade Tree Commission emphasized that planting a tree is not merely about digging a hole; it involves careful planning and consideration to ensure the tree's long-term health and growth.

The event kicked off with an engaging presentation from Shade Tree Commissioner Roy Larick and Shade Tree Commission Chairperson Jody Lathwell, who shared their expertise on choosing the right tree species for specific environments. Participants learned about site selection, crucial for ensuring that trees thrive in urban settings, where space and resources can be limited. The program also covered site preparation techniques and planting procedures, demonstrated by Vice Chair Amanda Wood and Commissioner Alyssa Zearly, who also explained the essential aftercare required to maintain the health of newly planted trees.

A highlight of the day was the planting of a black gum tree, generously donated by Davey Resource Group, in front of City Hall. This symbolic act served as a reminder of the community's commitment to enhancing their urban landscape and contributing to environmental sustainability. The black gum tree, known for its stunning fall foliage and adaptability, was chosen for its ability to thrive in local conditions, offering shade and beauty for years to come.

Attendees expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and knowledge from industry professionals. The event not only fostered a deeper understanding of tree care but also highlighted the significant role trees play in improving air quality, reducing urban heat, and enhancing the overall quality of life in Euclid.

As the event concluded, many participants left inspired to apply their newfound knowledge to their own gardens and neighborhoods, furthering the spirit of Arbor Day. The Euclid Shade Tree Commission hopes that this event will encourage more community members to join their efforts in making Euclid a greener, more sustainable city.
