The following rules and regulations have been established to benefit all Memorial Pool swimmers, to assure the safe operation of the pool, and to provide enjoyable recreational opportunities for all. Patrons must observe these rules and obey the instructions of Aquatics staff. Lifeguards and Aquatic staff have the authority to enforce all pool rules. Patrons who repeatedly violate the rules or reasonable requests of staff may be removed from the facility and are subject to the revocation of their swimming privileges, without refunds.

 

Patrons will be asked to leave the facility immediately, without a refund, for the following reasons:
  1. Improper conduct, including derogatory and/or profane or offensive language
  2. Causing injury to others
  3. Faking drowning
  4. Under the influence of alcohol or drugs 
  5. Failure to follow lifeguard directives and facility rules
General Rules and Admission Policies
  1. No one will be allowed in the swimming area unless the pool is officially open and lifeguards are on duty and in the LG chairs. Entering the pool area when it is not open for public use is prohibited and may be considered trespassing.
  2. Persons under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted in the pool area.
  3. All persons entering the pool area must pay the appropriate admission fee or present proof of a valid season pass or program registration.
  4. Organized groups must follow our group use policies and must be directly supervised at poolside by an adult in swim attire. All groups must schedule their visits in advance.
  5. No photography and/or video recording without the consent of the facility managers.
  6. Coolers/picnic baskets are permitted on the deck. All bags, baskets and coolers are subject to inspection. No grills, gas or electric cooking devices may be brought into the pool premises. Food is not permitted in the locker rooms.
  7. Glass containers, alcoholic beverages, drugs and pets are not permitted. Service animals are permitted in the pool area but not in the pool.
  8. Employees are the only persons permitted in staff rooms, filter room, pump rooms, chemical storage areas and offices.
  9. Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is not permitted inside the pool area including the bathhouse.
  10. Pool may be closed and cleared periodically for a safety check or to apply chemicals.

Attire

  1. In order to maintain a healthy water environment and to help prevent Recreational Water Illnesses, proper swim wear is required. Patrons will be asked to exit the pool and will be denied swimming privileges if proper swimwear is not worn. Pool Management will make the final determination. No refunds.
  2. Rash guards are designed for in water use and offer protection from the sun. Patrons requesting to wear a t-shirt for modesty or sun protection are encouraged to purchase a rash guard shirt. T-shirts may be worn with a signed liability release form on file. A minor child must have the release form signed by a parent/guardian. T-Shirts cannot be excessively loose as to pose a danger of entanglement, entrapment or strangulation.
  3. Infants/children who are not toilet trained must wear a clean disposable swim diaper or cloth diaper covered by separate rubber/vinyl pants (rubber/vinyl pants are recommended for disposable diapers also), all of which must fit snugly around the legs and waist. If the diaper becomes soiled, the child must exit the pool immediately, and may not return until cleaned and changed into a new diaper.
  4. Permissible Swim Attire
    1. Clean garments, intended for swimming for the current visit.
    2. Slim-fitting garments and athletic materials are recommended; lifeguards may ask to test swimming ability in non-traditional swimwear before entry to the deep end
  5. Non-permissible Swim Attire: The following items are not permitted. Patrons will be asked to exit the pool and will be denied swimming privileges if proper swim wear is not worn. Pool management will make the final determination. NO REFUNDS
    1. Denim and other materials with metal rivets
    2. Clothing with offensive messages and/or profanity.
    3. Garments that expose private parts, including those that are see-through when wet.

Conduct

  1. Socializing with or distracting pool staff, including lifeguards, is prohibited
  2. No person within the facility shall behave in such a manner as to jeopardize the safety and health of himself/herself and others. Such behavior shall be grounds for expulsion.
  3. Loitering is not permitted.
  4. Running, boisterous or rough play, pushing, acrobatics, dunking, wrestling, offensive, or disruptive splashing or yelling, diving or jumping without care or caution, snapping towels, improper conduct causing undue disturbances in the facility—including abusive or profane language—or any acts which would endanger any patron are prohibited.
  5. Spitting, spouting water, blowing nose, urinating, or defecating in the pool is prohibited
  6. No prolonged underwater swimming for time and/or distance. Competitive or repetitive breath holding can be deadly and is not permitted. Hyperventilation is absolutely not permitted.
  7. For health and safety reasons, gum chewing and/or eating is not permitted in the water.

Age & Health/Safety Regulations

  1. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult supervisor (age 18+).
  2. Patrons 12 years and younger using a Coast Guard approved life jacket must be accompanied by an adult,18 years or older, within arms’ reach.
  3. Any injury occurring in the pool must be reported to a lifeguard or pool supervisor immediately.
  4. Any person having a skin disease, sore or inflamed eyes, cold, nasal or ear discharge, or communicable disease will not be permitted in the pool.
  5. Anyone (adult or child) who is experiencing of diarrhea (even a mild case) may not use the pool. Persons with diarrhea should wait two weeks after symptoms end before returning to the pool. Pathogens of concern may still be shed up to two weeks following the end of the symptoms.

Equipment/Toys/Flotation Devices

  1. Children using flotation devices are restricted to the Parent-Tot area near the slide. Children must be supervised by a parent or adult guardian within arms’ reach. Only Coast Guard approved floatation devices are permitted.
  2. Patrons 12 years and younger using a Coast Guard approved life jacket must be accompanied by an adult, 18 years or older, within arms’ reach. Life jackets are free and available to borrow.
  3. Swim toys, balls, and the like may be used at the discretion of the supervisor on duty. The decision is based on the number of patrons and staffing ratio.
  4. Inner tubes, inflatable boats and rafts, inflatable bathing suits, and water wings are not permitted.
  5. Flotation devices, including life jackets, are not permitted in the deep water areas or on the slide.
  6. Fins, face masks, and snorkels may not be used by children except during approved instructional programs. Goggles are permitted, but may not be worn on the slide or diving board.
  7. Lap swimmers who wish to use fins, snorkels, or water exercise equipment must have approval from the manager.
  8. Starting blocks are not available for use during public swim periods. Use is restricted to coaches and instructors.

Rules for Lap Swimmers

  1. Lanes will be reserved for adults (18+ years and older) wishing to swim lengths undisturbed. Persons not swimming lengths should remain in other pool areas.
  2. Children under the age of 18 may use the lane lines to swim lengths, with prior approval from pool manager and if space permits.
  3. Lap lanes are intended for multiple swimmers. Lap swimmers should arrange themselves by speed in the lanes. It is not uncommon to swim four or more people to a lane if similar pacing and proper swim etiquette is used.
  4. For effective use, lap swimmers should swim counterclockwise near the lane lines and pass in the middle when more than 2 swimmers are in a lane. Like driving, swimmers should stay to the right while swimming in the lane and pass on the left.
  5. Stop only at turning walls. Move to the side to allow others to turn and continue. Turns are made in the center of the lane at the wall.
  6. Lifeguards may ask to move you to another lane to more closely match your swimming pace. Please comply as this will make everyone’s swim more enjoyable.

Diving Board and Deep Water (5 feet and deeper)

  1. The following deep water swim assessment is required for swimmers under the age of 21 to enter the pool’s deep end (5 feet and deeper):
    1. Swim test are conducted during rest breaks.
    2. Jump into deep water and surface, unassisted.
    3. Tread water for one minute in a vertical position with the mouth above the water line.
    4. Back float for ten seconds.
    5. A swimmer must be able to swim 1 width (25 yards) non-stop using the front crawl
      • Body must be horizontal
      • Flutter kick required, no bent knees or bicycling
      • Face in water; rhythmic breathing to front or side
      • Over water arm recovery (no doggy paddle)
    6. The entry, treading, swim and float must be done consecutively without resting.
  2. Swimmers who pass the deep water assessment will be provided with a wrist band and will be given access to the deep water (5 feet and deeper) areas of the pool.
  3. Patrons who do not take or pass the swim assessment will be limited to the shallow end.
  4. Competitive dives are not permitted. All dives must be in a forward position. Cart wheels, handstands, twisting, flips, back dives and other such gymnastic activities off the board or the side of the pool are prohibited.
  5. Only one person is allowed on the diving board at a time.
  6. Anyone using the diving board must wait until the preceding diver has surfaced and reached the ladder/wall before climbing on the board.
  7. Look before you leap; do not jump if there is someone if front or beneath you.
  8. Divers must dive straight forward from the front end of the board.
  9. No eyeglasses, goggles, or hats are permitted on the diving board.
  10. Upon surfacing, immediately swim to the nearest ladder. Do not swim under the board at any time.
  11. The deep swim area at the southeast corner of the pool is reserved for adults or children who have passed our swim test only.

Interactive Pool

  1. Children must be no more than 52 inches tall to enter this area. Children may outgrow the interactive area during the season. For the health and safety of all, lifeguards will enforce the height restriction.
  2. Adults are not permitted on the slides.
  3. Adult supervision (18+ years) is required in this area.
  4. Parents/Guardians/Supervisors (at least 18+ years old) must actively supervise their children. Chaise lounge chairs are not permitted in the interactive area.
  5. One child on the slide at a time.

Water Slide

  1. A swim test is recommended for all children wishing to use the large slide. Lifeguards reserve the right to deny use of the slide due to a patron's lack of swimming competency. Water is four feet deep at slide entry point.
  2. One rider at a time.
  3. Lifeguards will dispatch riders when the splash zone is clear.
  4. Must be at least 48 inches tall to ride a slide.
  5. Patrons must wait in line, one person per platform.
  6. Ride down the slide feet first only, sitting or lying down on your back.
  7. Keep hands inside the slide at all times
  8. No stopping, kneeling, or standing in the slide.
  9. No staying in the splash zone; riders must exit the splash zone as soon as possible.
  10. No jewelry, eyeglasses, goggles, belts, or hats are permitted on the slide.

Parent-Tot/Accessible Area

  1. This area is located on the east side of the pool near the slide.
  2. This area is reserved for adults with small children (under the age of 8) and those swimmers needing accessibility.
  3. All children in this area are required to be accompanied by an adult (18+ years) in the water. All others will be asked to move to another area of the pool.
  4. Playing on the stairs is prohibited, including swimming through the railing and under the stairs. Patrons are to use the stairs only for entering and exiting the pool.
  5. Patrons needing to use the wheelchair lift should alert management. All other patrons may not sit or climb on the lift and should stay clear of the area around it.

Rest Periods

  1. Youth rest periods are called at the top each hour. Adults (18+ years) may remain in the water.
  2. Rest periods are 15 minutes in length.
  3. The Inter-Active Pool is closed during rest periods.

Pool Closings/Foul Weather/Low Attendance

  1. No Refunds due to inclement weather.
  2. Swimming pools will be closed if inclement weather threatens.
  3. Pools may be close early if attendance is low (fewer than 10 swimmers) or the air temperature is below 70°F.
  4. Sections of the pool will be closed if attendance is low and/or adequate staffing is not available.
  5. At the sound of thunder or the sight of lightning, the pool will be cleared for at least 30 minutes. Patrons are asked to leave the facility as it is unsafe to remain on deck during these periods. We do not have enough safe space for all patrons.
  6. Rain checks will NOT be issued if thunder and lightning has prohibited swimming.

Help Us Help You!

The lifeguards’ responsibility is to prevent injuries and accidents from occurring, not to supervise individual children. Please supervise children in your care. Adults should not be involved in any other distracting activity (such as reading or talking on the phone, etc.). Constant, careful supervision is necessary even when children have demonstrated proficiency in the water.

  1. Please inform a guard of any vomit, blood spills, urine, or fecal matter in the pool, locker rooms, and pool deck.
  2. Watch out for the “Dangerous Toos:” Too Tired, Too Cold, Too Far from Safety, Too Much Strenuous Activity, and Too Much Sun.
  3. If you witness inappropriate behavior of patrons and/or staff please inform the pool manager, or contact the Aquatics Supervisor at 216-289-8114.
